Welcome back to Ghost of a Podcast. This week, we're going to do something a little different, and I'm sharing a quickie little post that I published to my Patreon this week because I think it'll be really supportive to your experience of the Eclipse. And stay tuned for a new reading next week. You can always send me a question to be considered for the podcast over at ghostofapodcast.com. So I have—for some reason, I was scrolling through old posts on Patreon, and I found this video that I made, actually, right around a Virgo Lunar Eclipse, and it was a little bit messy. And so I just kind of wanted to reiterate the concept from an old post in this post because I think it might be helpful.
What I was talking about was something that I called the four Ns for anxiety because this Eclipse Season is really kicking up a lot of perfectionistic thoughts and impulses, which means that it's really trying emotionally, and in classic Piscean style, the risk of increased anxiety is just dramatic. So I wanted to share this with you nice and quick.
It's really simple. If you're feeling anxious—anxious emotions, anxious, restless head—you start with noticing. You move to naming. Then you number and nurture. Let me break it down.
Noticing what you're feeling sounds so simple. You might think, "Well, I don't need to do that. That's a waste of time." But the only way to be able to nurture or care for something, the only way to work on something, to evolve something, to change it or accept it or make more of it or less of it, is to first notice it.
And so noticing what you are feeling is incredibly important. So, if you slow down and you tap in, you might notice that you're feeling restless and kind of sad and also kind of excited about something and really happy about something else and really grieving yet another thing—just noticing.
And as you notice, your next step is to name emotions. So restless is not an emotion. Restless is a feeling. It might be a mental state. It might be a physical state. But what's the feeling underneath that restlessness? When you create a practice of naming your emotions, naming your feelings, and keeping it really simple—so sad, mad, bad, glad is a great place to start. When you make a practice of naming it, it becomes something that is a little bit more tapped into your agency because you may be sitting here thinking, "Okay. I am feeling, let's say, agitated." So there's irritability. There's agitation. There's restlessness. What's the emotion underneath it?
And as you notice what you're feeling, you might start to be able to name, "Oh, I'm feeling sad." And your brain might say, "But why?" or, "What should I do about it?" But we're just naming it. The practice of naming it is so important. And it's important to recognize that there is this part of you that is asking the questions, that is noticing the feelings. That part of you is not your emotions or your thoughts. That part of you is capable of observing your emotions and your thoughts.
And when we name things that we notice, we tend to have more sense of separation from the immediacy of what we're feeling and agency around how we negotiate or navigate those feelings. So you're going to notice what you're feeling. Sit with it long enough to be able to name the emotions that are there. And then number it. On a scale from 1 to 10, what would you number the sadness? What would you number the excitement? What would you number the happiness or the anger?
This is not for any kind of conclusive reason or motivation. It's instead so that you can identify what you're feeling through the noticing—you're naming it—and then you're further separating yourself. Now, numbering does that. It separates you a little bit. It objectifies the feelings. And this can help you to feel less pressed or overwhelmed by those feelings. And because this is a Pisces Lunar Eclipse, feelings of overwhelm and burnout are just fucking—they are what we would expect to have.
And then, finally, what you want to be able to do is nurture. Sometimes the best way to nurture yourself is to establish some ground rules and some boundaries. Sometimes the best thing to do to nurture yourself is to reach out to a distraction. Sometimes it's to stop reaching out to distractions. There's not a one-size-fits-all for you or for any of us.
But the more that you can set the intention that you're going to nurture yourself, support yourself, be there for yourself, the more equipped you will be to navigate this period and, honestly, any period. Recognizing your own self-worth, your own value, is not always a self-esteem practice. Sometimes it's a habit you build. And you don't have to totally be behind it in order to choose the habits that build up self-worth.
This is one little tool that may or may not resonate for you that can help you to build a healthy relationship with yourself—and maybe I should say not even relationship, more healthy habits with yourself—so that you can navigate stressful times, super emotional times, times of burnout, with greater care and intention.
So I hope that's helpful. Feel free to pop any thoughts, questions, observations below. And we'll keep talking about this Eclipse.
